Life and Times

Briefly, Dr Mir Atta Muhammad Talpur is a medical doctor, health products, and health systems management consultant. He has agriculture farms producing commercial and organic health food and other crops in Sindh, Pakistan and has healthcare related businesses in Malaysia. This is enough about him for general readers, however for those who really want dig deeper and know more about him and his family and his interests, they may keep on reading as this is the article only for them!

He belongs to the Talpur family of Mirpurkhas, Sindh and is descendant of Sher-i-Sindh Mir Sher Muhammad Khan Talpur who served the people of the independent Sindh as its last head of the State and pioneered the freedom struggle of for his motherland, Sindh at the battleground of Dubbo on March 24th, 1843 by fighting a battle against British invaders, led by British East India Company's General Charles Napier.

Dr Mir took his early education in St. Michael's Convent in Mirpurkhas, followed by APWA and Government Comprehensive Schools in Mirpurkhas. He got his college education from Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai College, Mirpurkhas.

Later he got his bachelors in medicine and surgery (MBBS) from Liaquat Medical College, Jamshoro, (now Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences) then affiliated with the University of Sindh. He got his post graduate education in Health Systems Management from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London.

His partial switchover from role of a doctor practicing medicine to managing healthcare systems, working on social sector programs, and sustainable development initiatives is based on his obsession to contribute towards creating better living conditions for all human beings, in general, and poor and needy, in particular. This obsession led him to have post graduate qualifications in health systems management and work in the health and social sector programs.

He has always been interested to work on research projects related to health, well-being or social and sustainable human development. If he got opportunity to serve humanity through research, he’d certainly go for it. He has some plans and he’s working on them. He is also interested in health care related business which can benefit both him and general populace.

After his graduation from medical college, he did internship in medicine and surgery and then some clinical practice in primary care. He is registered with Pakistan Medical and Dental Council, and did devote lot of his time to help poor patients of his area, often, free of cost until he moved to Malaysia.

In mid-nineties, he joined the Social Action Program of Pakistan and worked as its Project Director at district level. He was mostly posted at district Hyderabad and it gave him a rich experience of working and coordinating with all federal and provincial departments and ministries, parliamentarians, members of provincial assemblies and cabinet ministers of Sindh province as well as the federal government hailing from the districts of Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas and Umerkot. This position enriched him with firsthand experience of politics, governance, bureaucracy and human development. The Social Action Program also consisted of primary health component and he is satisfied that he effectively coordinated with the district heath authorities and implemented the primary healthcare plan in the district.

His interests and hobbies have varied with time and circumstances. In the childhood, he played cricket with lots of enthusiasm and didn't miss watching any game being broadcasted live on the TV. He did play some football, badminton, volleyball, basketball and hockey but it was the cricket which was his main sport of interest and it still catches his attention when he see any game being played and coming live on TV. Now he feels more attracted to golf and wish to learn and join a golf club, depending on availability of time. During school days, he was fond of collecting postage stamps of foreign countries. He was also interested in collecting coins and other antiques. He still loves to collect antiques but it difficult to keep up with this hobby in this fast changing world. He does have lots of antiques of his own family which include few very old guns, including the gun of the Pioneer of our freedom struggle, Mir Sher Muhammad Talpur. It’s a muzzle load gun in which gunpowder is filled from the front of the barrel. He has many other antiques including old documents and letters of prominent governing person of the British Raj, written to his grandfather and great grandfather. There are many other very old belongings of his family which he still has and these include a Royal Talpur's dress, including a peculiar 'Talpurs' cap and coat of his great grandfather. A sword belonging to his family elders is very old but not really in good condition. He has some of the oldest camera photograph of his great grandfather. It is said that when camera was invented, the British Queen, Victoria, sent a team of photographers to get photographs of the prominent personalities of the sub-continent. That team took photographs of his great grandfathers in the first quarter of 1860s. He still has those photographs with him.

When he was in medical college and lived in Hyderabad, he often wrote in "letters to the editor" column of a prestigious newspaper of the country. Then, he started to write articles and many times got it published in Sindhi and English newspapers. His articles on many different issues have been published in Dawn, Hilal-i-PakistanJagoIbrat and Kawish newspapers. He has also posted some articles on his websites as well.

During his student life, he did go with his friends on hunting excursion in the Thar Desert, and hunted Chinkara deer, partridges, and other game birds. He also visited wetland of Sindh in for hunting waterfowl. Many times he also went with friends on hunting trips for Hubara Bustard and Great Indian Bustard as well. But he never felt comfortable with this 'interest' and then gave up this hobby entirely. He is now committed to preservation of flora, fauna, wildlife and environment.

He likes to read intellectual writings, books and see documentaries. His favorite poet in English is William Wordsworth as he was a keen observer of the nature and has depicted his observations very well in his poetry. Of course Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai is his favorite poet in Sindhi language. He considers his sufi poetry as a great instrument to do away with the religious disharmony in any society. His mystical message is not limited for the people of Sindh but is a message for the whole humanity.

While maintaining individuality, he thinks he did lean slightly to mysticism. He consider religion as a relation between individual and his Creator, with nobody having right to impose his own ideas of religion and culture on others. This is why he feels comfortable with people of diverse cultures and religions. As someone has said, different religions are like different rivers, all of which flow into the same ocean.

He is fond of intellectual discussions and chats. He believes he is always a student who would learn and gain something from such valuable talks. He likes to talk with very old knowledgeable persons to get first hand information and their impressions on their observations about those times when they were very young.

In his opinion the development of human beings has been erratic and unsustainable throughout the ages. He has always tried to find the causes of this unsustainablity. He feels human beings are leading themselves towards their own premature demise. It is primarily because inadequate human mental and conceptual development. In pursuit of answer to his question he did got involved in a Canadian Institute of Human Mental and Conceptual Development. It was a nice experience which helped him in attaining maturity in his mental and conceptual development. He launched an informal non-governmental organization with name, Sindh Society for Research and Development, for the furtherance of his interest in real sustainable development in Sindh.

When in Sindh, he constantly keeps in touch with the people of his area, where his farms and businesses are located. He keeps in touch with them to help them solve their problems. He did take part in local bodies’ elections once, but then gave up politics. When in Sindh, those well wishers who did voted him still come to him for their problems when he is there and he does his best to solve them. Part of his time he spends in Sindh is reserved for the people of his area.

Beside these interests, he was also involved in the formation of an environmental organization called "Asian Environmental Group". However, due to personal reasons he moved to Malaysia and had to give up this project. He is involved in his personal businesses, managing his agriculture farms where commercial as well as organic food is produced. He has been in real estate development and healthcare consultancy businesses as well.  In free time, he either travels or updates his web sites, which he maintains. More recently he rarely gets time to update these, but still continuing this hobby. He is also collecting information from various sources for his project, The Royal Talpur's of Sindh. He wants to compile a comprehensive book on the role of the Royal Talpurs in the history and heritage of the subcontinent. In this connection, he was invited by an Italian University for holding a seminar for their students which he did in April 2004. Beside this, he coordinates American British Sindhi Medical Network and Indus Farming Network. In Malaysia, he writes on MelakaReview.com, the web site, which he created due to his deep interest in the history, heritage, culture, people and development of Melaka. He wants to project and promote Melaka (Malacca) through this web site. In Sindh, he used to publish magazine containing articles on sustainable development and health promotion, a few times a year. He distributed it among people of his area free of the cost. He did not accept any financial donation in this regards and spent from his own pocket. However, on few occasions he received some books and articles. Once he received a set of medical journals (Lancet) (one year) from a medical researcher from UK. He handed over that set to Isra Medical University for benefit of their medical students.

He has many friends in various parts of the world. He like traveling and have widely traveled within Pakistan as well as in Malaysia. He has been to Middle East, a few times and to Iran, Afghanistan, Singapore, and Thailand as well. He has also been to Europe, and visited Italy and France extensively. Next on his wish-list are Bali, Spain and Australia.

Currently he is staying in Melaka, Malaysia, and provide healthcare related management services to various companies through his company Sindh Healthcare Sdn Bhd. His company also deals with other related businesses, the details of which can be found at SindhHealth.Com. He worked with Dr Ishak on establishment of Malacca College of Complementary Medicine, developed its curriculum and got it approved from various ministries in Malaysia. He has also provided consultancy services to Dr Ishak’s Center for Healthy Living, an integrated medical center in Melaka, Malaysia.

He is interested very much to learn Bahasa Melayu however, due to time limitations, he is still learning BM. He would welcome any help in this regards.

Still curious! ... then keep looking again and again for updates, on his web sites, including, sindhhealth.com, talpur.org, facebook.com/talpur and melakareview.com.
